The Halloween Books To Movies List

Halloween is almost upon us, and I'd argue that one of the best parts of this time of year is the excuse to watch nothing but scary movies!  Since some of us are falling behind on our reading goals for the year and can't afford to spend all that time not reading (it's me, I'm behind on my reading goal), here are some books that your favorite Halloween movies are based off of, so you can have the best of both worlds:

We'll start out this list with the obvious, all the classics from horror master Stephen King:
  • Carrie
  • Children of the Corn
  • Christine
  • Cujo
  • It
  • Misery
  • The Mist
  • Pet Sematary
  • The Shining
I personally feel no Halloween is complete without re-watching Harry Potter:
  • Harry Potter and the Sorcerer's Stone
  • Harry Potter and the Chamber of Secrets
  • Harry Potter and the Prisoner of Azkaban
  • Harry Potter and the Goblet of Fire
  • Harry Potter and the Order of the Phoenix
  • Harry Potter and the Half Blood Prince
  • Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows Part 1
  • Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows Part 2
Some movies I was surprised to find out were based on books:
  • The Ring (Koji Suzuki)
  • Jaws (Peter Benchly)
  • The Amityville Horror (Jay Anson)
  • Rosemary's Baby (Ira Levin)
  • The Exorcist (William Peter Blatty)
  • Psycho (Robert Bloch)
  • Bird Box (Josh Malerman)
  • The Birds (Daphne du Maurier)
  • Invasion of the Body Snatchers (Jack Finney)
I already knew these movies were adapted from famous books:
  • Dracula (Bram Stoker)
  • Frankenstein (Mary Shelley)
  • Interview With The Vampire (Ann Rice)
  • The Invisible Man (H.G. Wells)
  • Goosebumps 1 and 2 (R.L. Stine)

Director Tim Burton is partial to basing his films off of books:
  • Frankenweenie (Elizabeth Rudnick)
  • Sleepy Hollow (Washington Irving)
  • Coraline (Neil Gaiman)
  • Miss Peregrine's Home for Peculiar Children (Ransom Riggs)
We can tentatively add Alice in Wonderland and Charlie and The Chocolate Factory, because, I don't know if they quite make it into the Halloween category, they are undeniably creepy.

In addition to movies, there are also some T.V. shows that have book counterparts:
  • The Ghost Bride (Yangsze Choo)
  • The Haunting of Hill House (Shirley Jackson)
  • The Haunting of Bly Manor (based on The Turn of the Screw by Henry James)
  • The Twilight Zone (Rod Serling)
  • Pretty Little Liars (Sara Shepard)
  • The Outsider (Stephen King)
  • The Vampire Diaries (L.J. Smith)
  • True Blood (Charlaine Harris)
  • Hannibal (Thomas Harris)
  • Goosebumps (the T.V. show is a '90s kids' classic! (R.L. Stine))
  • Hemlock Grove (Brian McGreevy)
  • Wayward Pines (Blake Crouch)
And of course, we recently got a book adaptation of my all-time favorite, Hocus Pocus!

While this list is in no way exhaustive, I hope it inspires you to pick up a scary book to read in time for Halloween!
