Hunger Games News

It was announced yesterday that Suzanne Collins, author of my beloved Hunger Games books, would be releasing a prequel to the world famous trilogy next May.

My initial reaction was to quietly scream and then retweet every article I came across.  However, my excitement didn’t last that long, as I quickly had other feelings bubble up on the subject.
The last time one of my favorite series had a long-awaited subsequent book released, it was Harry Potter and the Cursed Child.  Hopefully J.K. Rowling doesn’t smite me for this, but I don’t think I’m alone when I say that book was straight up awful and it has no business being associated with Harry Potter (it seems like it might be justified if she smites me).  That book, which I was so incredibly excited for, completely let me down and left such a bad taste in my mouth.
I am worried that this new Hunger Games book is going to go the way of Cursed Child, that we will all spend the next 11 months in happy anticipation, only to be disappointed when it ends up like bad fan fiction.
I would never begrudge an author the opportunity to revisit beloved characters.  Honestly, I don’t know how they can even bear to say goodbye when the series comes to an end.  That being said, I wonder if once the spark is gone, it’s gone.  Is it better to let your characters lie and let fans use their imaginations to fill in past and future of your works, or is it worth chancing it to see if any of the magic is still left in the characters?
I don’t have an answer here, and I don’t think one answer exists.  I’m sure we all have our own feelings on prequels/sequels, whether good or bad.  What are yours?  Tell me in the comments!
