Five Tips for Picking the Perfect Summer Read
It is solidly summertime, which, at least in my opinion, is the best time of year for reading! When I was in school, I would wait all year for summer vacation, so that I could finally read whatever I wanted and not be bogged down with assignments from English class. As an adult, I still get the same feeling of excitement to read in the summer. There are few things in life that I enjoy more than sitting outside on a sunny day reading a book!
Here are five tips to help you pick the perfect summer reading book:
1. Choose a book according to its setting - What's your idea of the perfect vacation? Is it summer in Nantucket, a cruise through Alaska, or jetting off to Paris? Pick a book that takes place where you'd spend your dream vacation and you'll feel like you're taking a trip too, even if you're stuck in an office all summer.
2. Choose a book set in a fantasy setting - Let's take tip #1 a step farther and choose a book that takes place in a world that's completely made up! If you're reading to feel like you're traveling, what could be more exotic than visiting somewhere that literally no one has ever visited?
3. Learn something - While it might be counter-intuitive, not all summer reading has to be equivalent to trash TV. As a kid, one of my favorite things about summer reading was that I got to choose books on subjects that weren't offered in schools. Whether it's learning a new language or reading about a period in history that isn't covered too extensively in textbooks, choose a book that teaches you something new.
4. Read younger - If you want a vacation from your usual book choices, read something targeted for a younger demographic. That might be New Adult, Young Adult, or Middle Grade depending on your age. You might normally skip over these books because you just assume that you are too mature for them, but there are a lot of great books being released all the time for readers of all ages. Don't miss out!
5. Choose the book you've always meant to read - We all have that one book that we always say we are going to read, but just haven't gotten around to yet. Mine is War and Peace; I've always wanted to read it, but it's just so long that I always choose not to commit to it. Summer is the time to finally pick up that book that's been on your TBR list for way longer than you'd like to admit. The days are longer, so you have more time for reading - that means no excuses!
Whatever books you end up choosing, everyone needs a book to bring to the beach or pool! If you have suggestions on the perfect summer read, leave them in the comments below!
