Five Reasons to Quit the Book You Don't Like
If you're anything like me, you know how terrible it is when you don't like a book. You come home from work, maybe read a chapter or two, and then you find yourself getting distracted by TV. You know you should try harder to get some more reading done because the book is due back at the library at the end of the week and you're only a third of the way through. You feel obligated to renew it and try to slog through, but you just plain don't want to. Part of you wants to just quit, but the other part feels too guilty to pull the plug.
I've spent the last few years feeling far too guilty about quitting books that I straight up didn't like, and I finally got myself to the point where I don't feel bad about it anymore.
Here's why you should pass on a book that's just not doing it for you:
1. Not everything lives up to the hype - Think of all the movies and television shows that clean up at awards shows and get the best reviews in prestigious magazines and newspapers. Did you love all of them? Definitely not! Just because a book gets great reviews doesn't mean that it fits your taste.
2. Popular does not equal good - Everyone talking about a particular book on Instagram or Twitter does not mean that you're obligated to like it too. I recently started a book that was featured in what seemed like every third post on Instagram. I tried and tried, but I just didn't like the book! I might miss out on a trendy IG post, but it just wasn't the book for me.
3. Your time is too precious - Nobody wants to feel like they are missing out on a good book, but if don't like the book, you are truly wasting your time. With the half hour you spend reading a book you don't like, you could go for a walk, call your grandmother, or bake a cake.
4. Reading should be fun - It's easy to get sucked into feeling like you have to keep up with all the latest releases, but unless you're reading for school or work, you should enjoy it! Reading is my favorite free-time activity/hobby. As soon as it stops being fun, it might as well be a job!
5. There are just too many good books out there - New books are published every day and a lot of them are pretty stinkin' good! Every day you spend reading a book you don't like is a missed chance to pick up something you'll love.
At the end of the day, you should be reading what you love. Don't waste time not liking a book, or feeling guilty for feeling that way. As they say, there's a butt for every seat and there's a perfect book for every reader!
