Review - Not That I Could Tell
Not That I Could Tell
by Jessica Strawser
release date: 3/27/2018
320 pages
Chapters: medium
3 out of 5 stars
Billed as being "Pretty Little Liars for adults," this story centers on a group of neighbors after a night of drinking when one of them goes missing with her children, leaving her estranged husband behind. The neighbors work to understand how and why one of their own could just up and vanish, and what this disappearance means for them.
I chose this book as my first Book of the Month Club pick, and I was super excited to read it. I've really enjoyed the other thriller/mystery books written by female authors that have gained popularity lately (think Luckiest Girl Alive by Jessica Knoll and All The Missing Girls by Megan Miranda) so I figured Not That I Could Tell would be right up my alley.
Unfortunately, this book did not quite live up to my expectations. Don't get me wrong - I spent two snow days reading this book and I did enjoy it. I just didn't find myself to be quite as drawn into this book as I was with others in the same genre; I wanted to find out what happened but I didn't feel that voracious 'can't put it down' feeling that I had about the books I mentioned previously.
I think my main problem with this book is that I could tell pretty early on how the story would end. For me, to make a great thriller, the book can't be predictable. I enjoyed the writing, I enjoyed the characters, but it just didn't have the 'spark' I was expecting from it.
