Review - Vengeance Road
Vengeance Road
(Vengeance Road #1)
by Erin Bowman
released 2015
341 pages
Chapters: short
Rating: 4 out of 5 stars
This book came highly recommended by one of my bibliotaph friends, and it definitely did not disappoint. Before I even started reading, I was completely obsessed with the cover art. Even when reading on my tablet, the virtual jacket is absolutely stunning. If anyone wants to donate a poster version of it, I'd happily hang this book cover on my wall.
The story follows 18 year old Kate Thompson on her quest to seek revenge on a wild west gang for killing her father. Along the way our heroine disguises herself as a boy, introduces us to a ragtag cast of characters, finds a cute love interest, and even turns into a bit of an outlaw herself.
This book was truly a page-turner. The chapters are short, so I found myself constantly saying 'just one more chapter' and ending up reading five more. The writing is fast paced without skimping on details and emotional plot lines. It's hard not to get attached to the characters.
I've seen this book assigned a few different genres - Young Adult, Western, Historical Fiction, Romance. It has qualities of all of these, but in my opinion Western is the most fitting. One of the best parts of this book was the scenery descriptions. It was freezing here in NJ when I was reading this, and I really enjoyed how the author described the desert in a way that made you feel like you were there.
The main character, Kate, is an excellent heroine - she is both sympathetic and tough. She seeks revenge but still keeps her humanity. She finds romance but doesn't let that distract her from being a sharp-shooting bad ass.
I wish that the readers were given some more background information on the story's villain, the evil outlaw leader of the Rose Riders gang. He's a spectacularly evil villain, but I wish there was a bit more dimension there. There is a companion novel, Retribution Rails, so perhaps the reader will get more information about the antagonist in Vengeance Road #2.
I can't say I really have much experience with Westerns, but I think this was a great introduction. If you're looking for an easy, fast-paced read that will get you hooked from the first page, you can't miss this book!

Thanks for the critique. I never thought about reading a Western, but I think I'll try this one!
